FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do you work?

Given our unique positioning at the intersection of art, media and design, Art for Film operates more as a blend of a traditional prop house, fine art gallery and art consultancy. With our deep connections in the art world and an extensive catalog of works, we are always available to help with your search or to curate the perfect art for your project be it a staging, tv, film, commercial, photo shoot or special event.

Clients can select work to be picked up or shipped from either our Brooklyn Navy Yard warehouse where we stock over 1,000 high resolution reproductions (many of them beautifully framed) or originals directly from the artists’ studios, chose to print a new piece to their size requirements (some additional fees may apply), or request digital files (see below). If ordering a new print, we kindly request at least 24 hours turnaround time (although we have been known to move mountains and have prints ready same-day if needed). Prints can be printed on either watercolor paper, which can be put into one of our in-stock frames or one of your frames, photo paper (glossy or matte), or stretched on canvas.

Can I rent digital files, and can our production print it?

Nearly all of our artwork is available for printing. In order to protect our artists’ copyrights and the quality of the printing we usually handle the management of the digital files, but we understand that due to geographical or time constraints clients sometimes need to print images themselves. As some of our artists have exclusive arrangements with their galleries, not all of our digital files are available for the client to print. Please note that digital files, like physical pieces, are billed on a weekly basis and MUST BE RETURNED TO ART FOR FILM AT THE END OF THE RENTAL PERIOD IN FROM-THE-PRINTER CONDITION. Any prints not returned will incur a “lost print fee”, and ANY PRINTS, EVEN THOSE PRINTED BY THE PRODUCTION, RETURNED WITH PAINT OR OTHER MARKS ON THE SURFACE OF THE PRINT WILL BE CONSIDERED DAMAGED AND INCUR A REPLACEMENT FEE TO REPRINT AND RESTRETCH THE PRINT.

Can we paint on the surface of the reproduction or alter the frame?

Please don’t. Painting on the surface of the print is considered damage as it will alter the artist’s original copyrighted image and compromise the longevity and surface tension of the print, and painting or stripping a frame is also considered damage. Artwork should be returned in its original condition, unless prior authorization is given by Art for Film. If you absolutely must paint on the surface or change the piece in any way, please call us first to have a conversation about additional costs and possible consequences.

What does “available for print-to-size only” mean on your website?

This indicates that the original piece is not available and the image has not yet been printed, but we have a digital file of the image available for printing should you chose to go that route.

Is all of your artwork available to view online?

We do our best to keep our website up-to-date with our newest weekly inventory additions, but our artists are constantly creating new work, and we have an extensive reach in the art world far beyond what is on our website, so if you don’t see what you’re looking for, just ask!

Can I view the artwork in person?

Sure! We love meeting with our clients and showing them our work in person– just let us know when you’d like to come by the Brooklyn Navy Yard so we can email you a pass to enter. If you’d like to see original artwork, we’re always happy to arrange studio visits with the artist.

Can we rent or purchase original artworks?

Yes. If the original artwork is available we can coordinate a pick up & return of the artwork directly from the artist’s studio, but please note that we will need a COI (Certificate of Insurance) on file before any original artwork can be released. When clients fall in love with a piece and want to add it their personal or corporate collection, we will seamlessly handle all the logistics. Please note that purchasing an artwork does not include licensing rights, which would be a significant, additional cost. PLEASE DO NOT WRAP ORIGINAL PAINTINGS WITH BUBBLE WRAP, WHICH CAN DAMAGE THE PAINTING AND LEAVE AN IMPRESSION IN THE SURFACE OF THE PAINTING.

Do you offer custom framing?

We can usually add a simple lattice wood strip “frame” to our reproductions within 24 hours, or we can print pieces to fit into our in-stock frames or your frame. If you need a fancier, custom frame we would arrange for our framer to frame the piece, usually within 24-48 hours for an additional cost.

How do I open an account and what are your forms of payments?

To open an account, please email your credit one sheet and tax exempt form (if applicable) to: studio@artforfilmnyc.com and we will send you our w-9. We accept checks and credit cards, but are not set up to accept credit cards online. Accounts are set up as a Net 15, but Net 30 accounts are available for qualifying clients who provide a PO (Purchase Order) when confirming orders.

How does weekly rental work? Do you do rentals for longer than a week?

Artworks are rented and invoiced on a weekly basis. The rental period begins on the day of pick-up and continues for seven days. If the rental needs to be extended beyond the original rental dates, we would appreciate it if you could inform us as soon as you know as other clients may be interested in the same artwork. Rentals kept past the original rental dates are billed at a discounted weekly rate. Longer term rentals are, of course, always an option. Just let us know how long you’ll need the artwork for and we’ll give you a quote.

Can you help with budgeting?

We will always do the best that we can to work with our clients on reasonable budget requests, especially for valued returning clients.

Cancellations and refunds:

Orders that are confirmed and then cancelled may be subject to a 50% kill and restocking fee, and 100% of any printing and production costs incurred to fulfill the confirmed order. No refunds will be issued once the artwork has been picked up.

Do you deliver and install?

For set decoration we do not offer delivery and installation, but we’ll be happy to recommend some great companies, or help coordinate FedEx shipping. For stagings and art consultancies we offer a streamlined process from curation through installation and delivery.

What are your warehouse hours?

We are open Monday-Friday 9am-3pm and by appointment.
